A PRB in 54 cal will work just fine on elk out to 80 yards depending on the powder charge, of course, and that powder charge doesn't have to be as heavy as modern conventional wisdom would have you believe so you don't have to beat yourself up with recoil.

That rifle will shoot well with conicals too if you don't want to go old school. The locks are nearly identical, the Renegade is easier on the shoulder with hunting loads, due to the flat buttplate. I have had 2 Lymans, both shot great, still have 6 Renegades.

If you buy this one, pm me for some good load data. I have taken over 40 deer with a. What Bubba 50 says. TC all the way. I have both and the Lyman is a great gun mine is a flintlock in 54 cal.

But if your going to use it for hunting at all the renegade is top notch for carrying while hunting. I have one that I had Bobby Hoyt punch to 58 caliber and its great to carry and very accurate if all you want to do is kill paper. I own 3 renegades 2 I use as platforms for other barrels the other. My 54 cal is my go to gun. I put fiber optic sights on for the dark timber. It is my go to gun drops them with a prb no problem.

I like the Great Plains. Lots of original and aftermarket parts. If I was going flint I may consider the Great Plains. What rate of twist did you do your Hoyt barrel.Log in or Sign up. Feb 9, 1. Joined: Jan 24, Messages: Ive read from numerous forums that either Sharon or Douglas or both made the barrels for TCs Hawken rifle. Ive read that Sharon made them in Casper Wyoming at one time.

Ive also read that the stock and barrels were made in the state of Montana at one time. Ive read that to look underneath the barrel on the bottom flat you would see either a maltese cross or a spade and that would determin the barrels maker.

Also read that if it had the models name on the barrel Hawken that TC made the barrel. Does anybody really know who made their barrels? I have two 50 cal. Hawken rifles, one is an older Hawken that does not have Hawken stamped on the barrel, and I have the other that has Hawken stamped on the barrel which also has the QLA. Neither barrels have the Cross or Spade stamped underneath the bottom of the barrel flats. Could anyone give me the real answers concerning these barrels.

Respectfully, cowboys Feb 9, 2. Joined: Aug 31, Messages: 7, Location: Oregon. I'm currently making barrels on some of the machinery and possibly some of the tooling once owned by Hal Sharon and some of the tooling came from Green River Rifle Works. I believe this equipment was sold before Sharon started making TC barrels though. I'll make some inquiries when I get to the shop, if any one knows the answers it will be Joe, he owns the stuff, I just run it for him.

I believe barrels marked with a large 'M' on the underside were Green Mountain barrels, you might take a look to see if yours have it.

I spoke with Joe today and he confirms that Hal Sharon made barrels for Thompson Center from the start and that Hal also installed the breach plugs and hardware on the earliest barrels he made for Thompson. We have a couple of Sharon made Seneca barrels in. He also said that he has heard that Douglas and Green Mountain also made barrels for Thompson but has no direct knowledge of it, so he can't confirm it, unfortunately he doesn't know what the markings on the underside of the barrels mean, they could denote who made the barrel or they could have been used to tell who at Thompson inspected and approved them.

Does anyone know where I can get a schematic or an exploded view or assembly instructions? I bought a used one from my brother and I wanted to re-blue and look at the lock which did not strike all the time.

I got a new hammer, etc, etc and ready to put it back together which should be no problem. However, being a good Warrant Officer in the Army, retired or course, I would like to have something in front of me as I work? Checked online, checked all the schematics available, even downloaded the manual, but someplace there has to be an exploded view with parts lists, etc. View Public Profile. I figured even a kit assembly would have it or the manual with an exploded view and parts list. JLmoore Here is the source of a diagram.

I found one in very good shape. Needs a new ram rod and the prior owner scratched his initials in the trigger guard I think I can buff most of it out. From what I can tell of the bore, it has no noticeable pitting or frost. It would just be a guess but about 20 years ago you couldn't hardly get a 50 and most were A few years later everything coming out was 50 or bigger and you could hardly find a 45 anymore.

I'd say and just a guess it was about 15 years ago. Should be able to get the initials out without too much trouble being solid brass but if not you should be able to pick up a new trigger gaurd easy enough and withoutto much expence. Aim small, miss small! I think I kinda lucked into finding this one.

My dad built the same model from a kit when I was about 8 or so. Well, walked into the shop over the weekend. Saw he had two very similar muzzleloaders. One was a Charles Daly. Looked at the Thompson Center and the bore was near perfect.

Price tag Put it on layaway as I have other irons in the fire right now, but will be able to get it out of layaway soon. Looks like I will need to get some round balls cast up for it.

Only have 50 cal RBs right now.Local Listing Results Show All. Local Listing Results. Searching for your Local Listings Sorry, there are no results in your area. Please try a new zip code and search again. Hide Local Listings.
